Fernsig Essen

Some cool old phone I saw at work, In the underground of a Silo.

Was wired up in Steel Amoured cable, first one ive ever seen. A carton would get me this phone, when they upgrade their internal comms. They had atleast 3 of them onsite. Used in mining sites apparently, dust proof etc.

Mining phone if I'm not mistaken, designed so as not to create any sparks so they can be used without risk of explosion. Oldschool ringers used electromagnets (essentially a single pole motor smaking into another piece of metal) that would of course create sparks, bad in a possibly going to explode enviroment. They also had to consider making them touch etc.

I'll happily chip in for a carton if you can get me on of those 3!

Oh ok, sounds pretty cool. I imagine the ringer would be fully encased then given where it was, one spark would ignite the grain dust probably blowing up the entire silo complex, launching a phone to you from interstate. Would raise some eye brows on the wall at home.
